Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Redskins Talk,Leaving Town by admin on Wednesday 31 August 2011 at 10:41 pm

The Washington Redskins have waived 24-year old WR Malcolm Kelly with a injury settlement.  Kelly did not play last season due to injury.  He played in 21 games (10 starts) in his three years with the Redskins and he caught 28 passes for 365 yards (13.0 avg) with 0 TD grabs.  Kelly was a huge disappointment for the Redskins and they won’t miss him one bit going forward.

The Washington Redskins lose Jarvis Jenkins for the season

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Redskins Talk,Injury Reports,The Draft Report by admin on Friday 26 August 2011 at 9:21 pm

The Redskins have lost 23-year old DT Jarvis Jenkins to a torn ACL last night.  He played in 3 games in the preseason for the Redskins and he had 1 tackle.  Jenkins was a second round pick out of Clemson last April and the Redskins were depending on him to help the defense in 2011.  This is a big blow to the Skins but they hope he will be ready to rock in 2012.

Baltimore Ravens 34, Washington Redskins 31

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Redskins Talk,The Pre-Season by admin on Friday 26 August 2011 at 9:18 pm

The Redskins looked solid again offensively but the defense folded up the tent late in the game as the Ravens scored the last 10 points.  John Beck started at QB and he was solid as he completed 6 of 10 passes for 108 yards with 1 TD pass and 1 INT.  Rex Grossman also looked pretty good last night as he completed 8 of 15 passes for 112 yards with 1 TD pass and 0 INTs.  Kellen Clemens finished up the game and he didn’t look too good as he completed 4 of 8 passes for 33 yards with 0 TD passes and 1 INT.  Tim Hightower led the way on the ground with the Redskins last night with 56 yards rushing on 9 carries (6.2 ypc) with 1 TD run.  Rookie Roy Helu had a rough night against the Ravens’ D as he carried the ball 13 times for 44 yards (3.4 ypc).  He also caught 1 pass for 14 yards in this game.  WRs Terrence Austin (5 rec, 71 yards, TD), Santana Moss (3 rec, 51 yards, TD) and Anthony Armstrong (2 rec, 51 yards) led the way in the passing game for the Redskins last night.  The Redskins finished up with 103 yards rushing on 23 carries (4.5 ypc) and they also completed 18 of 33 passes (54.5%) for 238 yards last night.

The defense didn’t look too good at all last night for the Redskins.  CB Reggie Jones (8 tackles) and  safety DeJon Gomes (7 tackles, 1 fumble recovery) led the way for the D last night.  OLB Ryan Kerrigan (6 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss, 1 sack and 1 QB hit), DB Davonte Shannon (6 tackles, 2 tackles for a loss, 1 sack, 1 pass defensed and 1 QB hit) and LB H.B. Blades (6 tackles) also were working hard last night on D.  CB DeAngelo Hall picked off a pass that he returned 52 yards for a TD (it was off Joe Flacco) last night.  The Ravens finished up with 138 yards on 28 carries (4.9 ypc) and they also completed 28 of 45 passes (62.2%) for 314 yards last night.  The Redskins are now 2-1 on the season.

The battle for the starting QB job continues for the Washington Redskins

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Redskins Talk,Positional Previews by admin on Thursday 25 August 2011 at 6:24 pm

30-year old John Beck and 31-year old Rex Grossman are still duking it out for the starting QB job in 2011 as they both have looked really solid so far this pre-season.  Beck has only played in 1 game so far but it was a good one.  He completed 14 of 17 passes (82.4%) for 140 yards with 0 TD passes or interceptions (101.0 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 2 times for 17 yards (8.5 ypc) in that game.  Rex Grossman has played in both games so far in the pre-season for the Redskins and he has completed 26 of 38 passes (68.4%) for 295 yards with 1 TD pass and 1 INT (89.3 QB Rating).  The battle for the starting job will continue tonight when the Redskins have a matchup against the tough D of the Baltimore Ravens.

The Washington Redskins will likely have a much better running game in 2011

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Redskins Talk,Positional Previews by admin on Thursday 25 August 2011 at 6:17 pm

The Washington Redskins are turning to youth at RB in 2011 and that will likely be a positive.  25-year old Tim Hightower will likely be the starting going into the 2011 season.  He played in 16 games (13 starts) for the Cardinals last year and he carried the ball 153 times for 736 yards (4.8 ypc) with 5 TD runs.  Hightower also caught 21 passes for 136 yards (6.5 avg) last year.  Hightower is a perfect fit for the type of offense the Redskins run, as he can make one cut and get up the field.  Hightower has now played in 48 games (36 starts) in his first three years in the NFL and he has carried the ball 439 times for 1,733 yards (3.9 ypc) with 23 TD runs.  He has also caught 118 passes for 801 yards (6.8 avg) in his NFL career to date.

25-year old Ryan Torain is still trying to recover from a broken hand so that he can be ready for the season opener in less than three weeks.  Torain played in 10 games (8 starts) for the Redskins last year and he carried the ball 164 times for 742 yards (4.5 ypc) with 4 TD runs.  He also caught 18 passes for 125 yards (6.9 ypc) with 2 TD grabs (those were the first catches of his NFL career).  Torain has been a Shanahan favorite since he drafted him in Denver, so he will get his share of carries in 2011.  Torain has now played in 12 games (9 starts) in his first three years in the NFL and he has carried the ball 179 times for 811 yards (4.5 ypc) with 5 TD runs.

22-year old Roy Helu is looking good in the pre-season for the Redskins.  The rookie out of Nebraska is making a good first impression on the Redskins’ coaching staff, but I still have a feeling that he will be #3 on the depth chart when the 2011 season begins.

23-year old, rookie RB Evan Royster has also looked decent in the pre-season for the Redskins.  But the 6th round pick is likely to start his rookie year on the practice squad unless a RB ahead of him on the depth chart (Hightower, Torain or Helu) get injured before the 2011 season starts.

PROJECTED GRADE FOR THE REDSKINS RBS IN 2011:  C+

The Washington Redskins waive James Davis

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Redskins Talk,Leaving Town by admin on Monday 22 August 2011 at 3:42 pm

The Redskins have waived 25-year old RB James Davis.  Davis walked out of camp recently and he never returned.  Davis played in 3 games (0 starts) for the Redskins last year and he carried the ball 15 times for 51 yards (3.4 ypc).  He also caught 4 passes for 45 yards (11.3 avg) last season for the Redskins.  He played in 7 games overall for the Redskins & Browns last year and he carried the ball 19 times for 60 yards (3.2 ypc).  Davis didn’t catch any passes in his four games with the Browns last year.  The Redskins won’t miss Davis at all as they have quite a few RBs stepping up in the pre-season.

Washington Redskins 16, Indianapolis Colts 3

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Redskins Talk,The Pre-Season by admin on Saturday 20 August 2011 at 3:19 pm

The Washington Redskins dominated the Colts last night in Indianapolis.  John Beck got the start at QB and he completed 14 of 17 passes for 140 yards with 0 TD passes and 0 INTs.  He also carried the ball 2 times for 17 yards (8.5 ypc) last night.  Rex Grossman didn’t look as good as he did last week.  Grossman completed 7 of 12 passes for 88 yards with 0 TD passes and 1 INT last night.  Kellen Clemens threw 1 incomplete pass last night and he carried the ball 1 time for 9 yards.  Rookie Roy Helu led the way on the ground for the Redskins last night with 101 yards rushing on 14 carries (7.2 ypc) and he also caught 4 passes for 23 yards (5.8 avg).  Tim Hightower had another solid game for the Skins as he carried the ball 6 times for 70 yards (11.7 ypc) with 1 TD run and he also caught 1 pass for 7 yards.  Rookie WR Leonard Hankerson led the way in the passing game with 3 receptions for 46 yards (15.3 avg) last night.  The Redskins finished up with 215 yards rushing on 35 carries (6.1 ypc) and they also completed 21 of 30 passes (70%) for 200 yards last night.

The defense was outstanding against the undermanned Colts last night.  DE Darrion Scott led the way for the Skins on D last night with 5 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss, 1 sack and 1 QB hit.  DE Kedric Golston (4 tackles and 1 QB hit) and LB Perry Riley (4 tackles and 1 QB hit) also had solid games for the Redskins last night.  CB Brandyn Thompson pitched in with 1 tackle, 1 pass defensed and 1 interception last night.  The Redskins could only muster 55 yards rushing on 17 carries (3.2 ypc) and they also completed 12 of 27 passes (44.4%) for 95 yards last night.  The Redskins are now 2-0 on the pre-season.

The Washingon Redskins claim OLB Thaddeus Gibson off waivers

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Redskins Talk by admin on Thursday 18 August 2011 at 12:07 pm

The Redskins have claimed 23-year old OLB Thaddeus Gibson off waivers from the 49ers.  Gibson played in 2 games as a rookie last year for the 49ers and he had 3 tackles and 2 forced fumbles.  This is a nice low risk move for the Redskins as Gibson is an athletic player who could help them if he is focused and motivated.  If not, they will just cut him loose.

The Washington Redskins sign kicker Clint Stitser

Blogged under Bloglockers,Free Agent Additions,Front Page,General Redskins Talk by admin on Wednesday 17 August 2011 at 11:44 pm

The Redskins have signed 26-year old kicker Clint Stitser to provide some competition for Graham Gano.  Stitser played in 5 games for the Bengals last year in which he connected of 7 of 8 field goals (87.5%).  He also connected on 8 of 10 extra points to finish with 29 points in his first season in the NFL.  Stitser will likely have a hard time beating out Gano, but I like that the Redskins decided to bring in more competition for him even after releasing Shayne Graham.

UPDATE:  (8/31/2011) – The Redskins have released Clint Stitser.
