The Washington Redskins trade down and then pick DE Ryan Kerrigan in the first round

The Washington Redskins decided to trade down from the 10th spot in the draft with the Jacksonville Jaguars (they picked QB Blaine Gabbert out of Missouri).  The Redskins got the #16 overall pick (1st round) and the #49 overall pick (2nd round) in the deal.  The Redskins then took 23-year old DE Ryan Kerrigan out of Purdue.  Kerrigan is 6’3″, 255 pounds and he runs a 4.8 40.  It will be interesting to see if the Redskins leave him at DE or try to convert him to OLB.  Kerrigan played in 12 games (all starts) for Purdue last year and he had 70 tackles, 26 tackles for a loss, 12.5 sacks, batted down 1 pass, forced 5 fumbles and he recovered 2 fumbles.  Kerrigan played in 48 games (35 starts) in his four years with the Boilermakers and he had 210 tackles, 57 tackles for a loss, 33.5 sacks, batted down 7 passes, forced 14 fumbles and he recovered 2 fumbles.  The Redskins needed pass rushing help, so I like this pick for them.  I also liked the deal as the Redskins picked up a much needed extra second round pick.

The Washington Redskins will be looking to fill a lot of holes this weekend

The Washington Redskins only have 2 draft picks in the first four rounds of this draft (#10 and #41 overall), and I look for them to fill their two biggest needs (QB and NT) with those two picks.  Head Coach Mike Shanahan believes that he can make a star RB out of a late round pick, so look for him to try that again this year.  Here is a look at the players I have the Redskins taking in my mock draft:

1st round (#10 overall) – Jake Locker, QB, Washington

2nd round (#41 overall) – Muhammad Wilkerson, DT, Temple

5th round (#144 overall) – Joel Devine, RB, West Virginia

6th round (#177 overall) – Detron Lewis, WR, Texas Tech

7th round (#213 overall) -Evan Royster, RB, Penn State

7th round (#224 overall) – DeAndre Brown, WR, Southern Mississippi

7th round (#253 overall) – Mike Hartline, QB, Kentucky

This would be a very nice haul for the Redskins, especially if Shanahan works his RB magic and hits big with either Devine or Royster.

The Washington Redskins didn’t do too well in last April’s NFL Draft

In the Redskins’ defense, they only had 1 pick in the first three rounds of the Draft.  But, they did that to themselves so they have no one else to blame.  Here’s a look at how the rookie class did in 2010:

Trent Williams:  The Redskins took OT Trent Williams in the first round (#4 overall) out of Oklahoma.  Williams played in 14 games (13 starts) for the Redskins last year and he did a very solid job.  Williams will likely be entrenched at LT for a long time for the Redskins as he would make the old “Hogs” happy.

Perry Riley:  The Redskins took inside linebacker Perry Riley in the 4th round (#103 overall) out of LSU.  He played in 8 games (0 starts) for the Redskins last year and he had 7 tackles.  Riley will need to step up his game if he wants to get on the field much for the Redskins in 2011.

Dennis Morris:  The Redskins took FB Dennis Morris out of Louisiana Tech in the 6th round (#174 overall).  They then dealt Morris to the St. Louis Rams for a conditional draft pick.  He didn’t get into any games last year for the Rams.

Terrence Austin:  The Redskins took WR Terrence Austin in the 7th round (#219 overall) out of UCLA.  He played in 5 games (0 starts) for the Redskins last year and he caught 3 passes for 47 yards (15.7 avg).  Austin also returned 1 kickoff for 15 yards for the Skins’ last year.  Austin will have to pick up his game if he wants to make the Redskins’ roster in 2011.

Erik Cook:  The Redskins took center Erik Cook in the 7th round (#229 overall) out of New Mexico.  He spent most of his rookie season on the practice squad before getting signed to the active roster late in the year.  He didn’t get into any games for the Skins last year.  Cook will need to pick up his game if he wants to keep getting paid to play football.

Selvish Capers:  The Redskins took OT Selvish Capers in the 7th round (#231 overall) out of West Virginia.  Capers spent his rookie season on the practice squad for the Redskins.  He will need to add some bulk and come to Training Camp ready to rock if  he wants to earn a roster spot with the Redskins in 2011.
