The Washington Redskins need more out of the QBs in 2011

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Redskins Talk,Needs to Step Up by admin on Monday 24 January 2011 at 9:10 pm

The Redskins need more out of the QB position in 2011.  34-year old Donovan McNabb is likely only to spend one season in Washington.  He played in 13 games for the Redskins last season and he completed 275 of 472 passes (58.3%) for 3,377 yards with 14 TD passes and 15 INTs (77.1 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 29 times for 151 yards (5.2 ypc) for the Redskins last season.  McNabb has now played in 161 games in his NFL career and he has completed 3,076 of 5,218 (58.9%) passes for 36,250 yards with 230 TD passes and 115 INTs (85.7 QB Rating).  He also has carried the ball 602 times for 3,400 yards (5.6 ypc) with 28 TD runs in his career.  I don’t see McNabb playing with the Skins next season even after they signed him to a contract extension during the year.

30-year old Rex Grossman made a decent enough showing at the end of last season for the Skins that they would likely want to bring him back as the backup QB in 2011.  Grossman played in 4 games for the Redskins last season and he completed 74 of 133 passes (55.6%) for 884 yards with 7 TD passes and 4 INTs (81.2 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 3 times for 6 yards (2.0 ypc) last season.  Grossman has now played in 41 games in his NFL career and he has completed 598 of 1,104 passes (54.2%) for 7,081 yards with 40 TD passes and 40 INTs (70.9 QB Rating).  Grossman has also carried the ball 61 times for 95 yards (1.6 ypc) with 3 TD runs in his career so far.

VERDICT:  I see the Redskins dealing McNabb on or around draft day.  The Redskins will likely either draft a QB in the first round or they will try to bring in another veteran QB to start in 2011.

New York Giants 17, Washington Redskins 14

The Redskins were just giving the ball away too much to win yesterday and that’s the bottom line.  Rex Grossman completed 26 of 44 passes for 336 yards with 2 TD passes and 1 INT.  He also lost two fumbles!  Ryan Torain led the way on the ground for the Redskins with 61 yards rushing on 18 carries (3.4 ypc).  Keiland Williams only carried the ball 1 time for 4 yards but he also caught 4 passes for 47 yards (11.8 avg).  WRs Anthony Armstrong (2 rec, 84 yards, TD) and Santana Moss (9 rec, 74 yards) led the way in the passing game for the Redskins yesterday.  TEs Chris Cooley (5 rec, 53 yards) and Fred Davis (2 rec, 20 yards, TD) also played well for the Redskins yesterday.  The Redskins finished up with 67 yards rushing on 20 carries (3.4 ypc) and they also completed 26 of 44 passes for 318 yards.

The Redskins’ D played pretty well yesterday and it wasn’t there fault for the loss.  LB London Fletcher (9 tackles and 1 QB hit), CB DeAngelo Hall (6 tackles, 2 passes defensed and 1 tackle for a loss) and CB Phillip Buchanon (5 tackles, 1 pass defensed and 1 interception) led the way for the Skins’ yesterday.  The Giants finished up with 82 yards rushing on 32 carries (2.6 ypc) and they also completed 17 of 29 passes for 243 yards.  The Redskins finished the season tied with the Cowboys for last place in the NFC East with a 6-10 record.

London Fletcher is still a tackling machine for the Washington Redskins

35-year old inside linebacker London Fletcher is showing no signs of slowing down as he is still a tackling machine.  Fletcher has played in 15 games for the Redskins so far this year and he has 127 tackles, 3 tackles for a loss, 2.5 sacks, 11 passes defensed, 1 interception, 3 forced fumbles and 3 fumble recoveries.  Fletcher has now played in 207 games in his first 13 years in the NFL and he has 1,607 tackles, 32.5 sacks, 71 passes defensed, 15 forced fumbles and 16 interceptions (2 returned for TDs).  I see no reason to think that London Fletcher won’t continue being a tackling machine in 2011.

New York Giants (9-6) vs. Washington Redskins (6-9)

The Redskins are playing for pride now and they can spoil the year for the Giants with a win tomorrow.  The Redskins have played pretty well the last three weeks despite being 1-2 as they have been outscored 67-66.  The Giants have lost two games in a row in which they have been outscored 83-48!  The Giants need a win over the Redskins and a loss by the Packers against the backups of the Bears to make the playoffs.  Here is a look at the matchups in this game:

When the Redskins have the ball:  The Redskins are likely to be wide open on offense in this game with nothing to lose.  I look for them to run a balanced attack with Ryan Torain toting the rock on the ground and Rex Grossman chucking the ball deep to Santana Moss and Anthony Armstrong.  The Redskins will have to establish a running game with Torain against a Giants’ D that is allowing 103.5 yards rushing per game and 4.3 yards per carry to help slow the Giants’ pass rush.  The Giants have 44 sacks already this year and the Redskins have allowed 44 sacks this year.  To combat the Giants’ heavy pass rush the Redskins could throw shorter passes to TE Chris Cooley and RB Keiland Williams out of the backfield.

When the Giants have the ball:  The Redskins are going to have to sack up to stop the Giants’ running game!  The Giants are averaging 141.2 yards rushing per game and 4.7 yards per carry so the Redskins must be ready to slow down Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs.  Hakeem Nicks is out with a broken toe in this game so the Redskins will have to key Mario Manningham and Kevin Boss in this game.  Eli Manning has 24 interceptions this year so look for DeAngelo Hall to have a good chance of catching a pass or two from him tomorrow.

PREDICTION:  GIANTS 24, REDSKINS 20

The Washington Redskins place Kareem Moore on I.R.

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Redskins Talk,Injury Reports by admin on Saturday 1 January 2011 at 6:35 pm

The Washington Redskins place 26-year old safety Kareem Moore on the Injured Reserve List with a knee injury.  Moore played in 12 games for the Redskins this year and he had 64 tackles, 5 passes defensed, 1 interception and 2 forced fumbles.  Moore has now played in 42 games in his first three years with the Redskins and he has 113 tackles, 8 passes defensed, 2 forced fumbles and 2 interceptions.  Moore will be missed tomorrow against the Giants as he has improved in each of his three years with the Redskins.
