The Washington Redskins acquire DE Erasmus James from the Vikings

The Redskins have acquired 25-year old DE Erasmus James from the Vikings for a conditional 7th round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.  James has missed a lot of time due to injuries in his career but if he can stay healthy he can help the Redskins with one of their weak points as he can rush the passer.  He played in only 6 games last season for the Vikings and he made only 7 tackles.  James has now played in 23 games in his NFL career and he has made 37 tackles, has 5 sacks and he has defensed 2 passes.  James was a first round pick just three seasons ago by the Vikings so he’s definately worth a gamble with a 7th round pick.

The Redskins also released WR/KR Jerome Mathis.  Mathis was not really needed after the Redskins drafted Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly.

2. (51) Malcolm Kelly, WR

Many had Malcolm Kelly ranked as one of the top three WRs in the draft so the Redskins were pleased to see him slip to them in the 2nd round.  Kelly is a big guy at 6’3″, 220 pounds but he’s a titch slow as he runs a 4.5 40.  Speed might not matter a whole lot to Kelly as he is very physical and often snatches the football away from defenders.  Kelly has played in 39 games (31 starts) at Oklahoma and he caught 144 passes for 2,285 yards (15.9 avg) with 21 TD grabs.  This was another solid pick by the Redskins.

2. (48) Fred Davis, TE

The Redskins were pleased to see TE Fred Davis of USC available to them in the 2nd round.  He will serve the team mostly in two TE sets as Chris Cooley is entrenched as the starter.  Davis is a big guy at 6’2″, 250 pounds and he runs a 4.55 40 so he can get down the field.  He is a converted WR so receiving is his main skill on the football field….he will need to work on his blocking.  Davis played in 48 games (26 starts) at USC and he caught 117 passes for 1,408 yards (12.0 avg) with 13 TD grabs.  Another nice pick by the Redskins.

2. (34) Devin Thomas, WR

The Redskins wanted to get more physical in the passing game and drafting Thomas was a good start to achieve that goal.  Thomas is 6’1″, 220 pounds and he runs a 4.5 40.  He might be a little bit raw as he was only a starter one season in college…but he was outstanding.  Thomas played in 23 games (12 starts) at Michigan State and he caught 85 passes for 1,350 yards (15.9 avg) with 9 TD grabs.  Thomas will battle fellow rookie Malcolm Kelly for the #3 WR job on the Redskins this season.  This was a very nice pick for the Skins as Thomas has a huge upside.
