The running game of the Washington Redskins was in good hands in 2007

The backup running back of the Redskins (Ladell Betts) could start on about half of the teams in the NFL which shows what kind of depth the team had at that position.  Clinton Portis was the main man for the Redskins in the running game in 2007.  Portis played in all 16 games (16 starts) and he carried the ball 325 times for 1,262 yards (3.9 ypc) with 11 TD runs.  He also caught 47 passes for 389 yards (8.3 avg).  Portis has now played in 84 games (79 starts) in his NFL career and he has carried the ball 1,710 times for 7,715 yards (4.5 ypc) with 63 TD runs.  He also has caught 205 passes for 1,688 yards (8.2 avg) with 4 TD grabs.

Ladell Betts played in all 16 games (0 starts) last season for the Redskins and he carried the ball 93 times for 335 yards (3.6 ypc) with 1 TD run.  He also has caught 21 passes for 174 yards (8.3 avg) with 1 TD grab.  Betts has now played in 80 games (11 starts) in his NFL career and he has carried the ball 659 times for 2,760 yards (4.2 ypc) with 10 TD runs.  He also has caught 126 passes for 1,126 yards (8.9 avg) with 3 TD grabs.

Fullback Mike Sellers did a good job of blocking last season for the Skins.  He played in 14 games (12 starts) in 2007 and he carried the ball 26 times for 78 yards (3.0 ypc) with 2 TD runs.  He also caught 17 passes for 117 yards (6.9 avg) with 1 TD grab.  Sellers has now played in 115 games (41 starts) in his NFL career and he’s carried the ball 40 times for 132 yards (3.3 ypc) with 3 TD runs.  He also has caught 73 passes for 582 yards (8.0 avg) with 15 TD grabs.

Rock Cartwright does most of his damage on kickoff returns.  He played in 15 games (0) starts last season and he carried the ball 2 times for 0 yards (0.0 ypc).  Cartwright has now played in 91 games (3 starts) in his NFL career and he has carried the ball 146 times for 647 yards (4.4 ypc) with 6 TD runs.  He also has caught 31 passes for 320 yards (10.3 avg) with 1 TD grab.

Hall of Fame head coach Joe Gibbs has stepped down for a second time with the Redskins as he has cited personal issues as  the reason as his grandson is really sick.  Gibbs second go around with the Redskins wasn’t as good as the first time.  In his four year second run he compiled a 30-34 (.469 %) regular season record and a 1-2 post season record.  Gibbs coached the Redskins for 15.5 seasons and he compiled a regular season record of 154-94 (.621 %) and a post season record of 17-7 (.708 %).  Gibbs also led the Redskins to Super Bowl Championships in 1982, 1987 and 1991.

Seattle Seahawks 35, Washington Redskins 14

The Redskins showed little life for the first three quarters of this football game before a spurt at the start of the 4th quarter which saw them score two TDs in the span of less than three minutes to give them a 14-13 lead, but then the roof caved in.  Todd Collins threw a couple of pick sixes and then the game ended with the Skins losing by 21 points……Sean Taylor’s number.

Collins completed 29 of 50 passes in this game for 266 yards with 2 TD passes and 2 interceptions (both returned for TDs).  Clinton Portis had a rough time finding anywhere to run against the speedy defense of the Seahawks.  He carried the football 20 times for 52 yards (2.6 ypc) and he also caught 4 passes for 28 yards (7.0 avg).  Antwaan Randle El (10 rec, 94 yards, TD), Santana Moss (6 rec, 68 yards, TD) and Chris Cooley (5 rec, 46 yards) all had solid games for the Skins.  The Redskins finished up with 75 yards rushing on 29 carries (2.6 ypc) and they also completed 29 of 50 passes for 244 yards.

Despite the score the defense played pretty well for the Redskins yesterday.  They were led by Shawn Springs (8 tackles) and LaRon Landry (5 tackles, 2 interceptions).  The Seahawks finished up with 77 yards rushing on 21 carries (3.7 ypc) and they also completed 20 of 32 passes for 227 yards.

Washington Redskins vs. Seattle Seahawks

Blogged under Bloglockers, The Playoffs, Front Page, Redskins Headlines, This Week's Matchup Report, General Redskins Talk by admin on Friday 4 January 2008 at 7:30 pm

With the weather windy and rainy in Seattle this will be a very interesting matchup as weather sometimes is the great equalizer.  The Seahawks have one of the best home field advantages in the NFL but the Redskins are motivated to keep winning for their fallen teammate Sean Taylor as they have won 4 games in a row.

The Redskins will attempt to pound the football on the ground against the Seahawks with Clinton Portis and LaDell Betts.  The Redskins should have success on the ground as they average 116.9 yards rushing per game while the Seahawks allow 102.8 yards rushing per game.  The Seahawks defense is on the small side but they are fast and they do get to the QB.  The Redskins offensive line must do a good job of keeping Patrick Kerney (14.5 sacks), Julian Peterson (9.5 sacks) and Darryl Tapp (7 sacks) out of there backfield or QB Todd Collins will be in deep trouble.  To combat the heavy pass rush of the Seahawks look for the Redskins to use TE Chris Cooley early and often in this game.  Also, look for Collins to take some shots deep to Santana Moss now that he’s healthy but he better be careful because CB Marcus Trufant had 7 interceptions this season.  Joe Gibbs will also probably pull out a gimmick play involving Antwaan Randle El at some point.

The Seahawks have been a pass first team this season as they have averaged 247.8 yards passing per game but the weather will likely hinder them a bit.  Still, look for Matt Hasselbeck to be engineering an offense that likely will have 4-WR sets.  Look for the Seahawks to attack the nickel and dime backs of the Redskins as they have been ineffective this season.  It would be nice if Shaun Alexander or Maurice Morris could help out and balance the offense tomorrow afternoon but the Redskins have a stingy run defense that is allowing only 91.8 yards rushing per game this season.

PREDICTION:  WASHINGTON REDSKINS 21, SEATTLE SEAHAWKS 17

The Washington Redskins got good production from their QBs

The Redskins threw Jason Campbell to the wolves and he didn’t play too bad.  He played in 13 games for the Redskins this season and he completed 250 of 417 passes (60%) for 2,700 yards with 12 TD passes and 11 interceptions (77.6 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 36 times for 185 yards (5.1 ypc) and he scored a TD.  Campbell has now played in 20 games in his NFL career and he has completed 360 of 624 passes (57.7%) for 3,997 yards with 22 TD passes and 17 interceptions (77.3 QB Rating).  He also has carried the ball 60 times for 292 yards (4.9 ypc) with 1 TD run.

Todd Collins helped drive the Redskins to the playoffs with his fine play down the stretch when Jason Campbell was injured.  Collins played in 4 games this season for the Redskins and he completed 67 of 105 passes (63.8%) for 888 yards with 5 TD passes and 0 interceptions (106.4 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 8 times for 1 yard (0.1 ypc) this season.  Collins has now played in 44 games in his NFL career and he has completed 369 of 561 passes (56.7%) for 4,335 yards with 22 TD passes and 19 interceptions (76.2 QB Rating).  He also has carried the ball 82 times for 152 yards (1.9 ypc).
