Washington Redskins vs. Arizona Cardinals

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Redskins Talk,This Week's Matchup Report by dawgpounded on Friday 19 October 2007 at 8:43 pm
This is a matchup between two teams that are playing a lot better than the experts thought they would.  The Cardinals bring a 3-3 record to this matchup and the Redskins are 3-2.  But, both teams have suffered a ton of injuries that could hurt them on Sunday.

The Cardinals would probably prefer to keep the ball on the ground with Tim Rattay getting another start.  Edgerrin James (522 yards rushing, 4.0 ypc) will challenge the Redskins front 7 that is allowing only 79.6 yards rushing and 3.7 yards per carry so far this season.  With running room likely hard to find against the Redskins, Rattay must throw the ball down the field to Larry Fitzgerald and Bryant Johnson.  Redskins CB Shawn Springs could miss the game because he’s by his father’s side who’s in a coma in Dallas.  Even if he does play he might not be able to focus on his job.

The Redskins also prefer to run the football but it will be hard to do with all of the injuries they have on the offensive line.  The Cardinals allow 114.3 yards rushing per game and 4.4 yards per carry so it’s possible that Clinton Portis (363 yards rushing) could get his yards.  The Cardinals blitz often which could mean that the Redskins will focus on shorter passes.  With that in mind the key player for them will likely be the same guy that had a big week against the Packers…..TE Chris Cooley.

PREDICTION:  With all of the injuries both teams have suffered recently I just can’t see the game being a high scoring affair.  REDSKINS 17, CARDINALS 14.

Stop hating on S Moss

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Redskins Talk,Redskins Headlines by SMossIsBoss on Tuesday 16 October 2007 at 1:24 pm

we all heard that he acknowledged that he didn’t have a good game last sunday…. that’s why he benched himself… I don’t think its fair for fans to disown him based on his performance in one game. Let’s be serious, how many games has he really played terrible in… not many.

Green Bay Packers 17, Washington Redskins 14

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,Game Recaps,General Redskins Talk by dawgpounded on Sunday 14 October 2007 at 10:43 pm

The Washington Redskins let a game slip away that they should have won with the way the defense played.  Linebacker Rocky McIntosh led the Redskins with 10 tackles.  Safety Sean Taylor also made a big impact as he had 3 tackles and 2 interceptions.  The Packers only rushed for 56 yards on 20 carries (2.8 ypc) and they completed 19 of 37 passes for 169 yards.

Jason Campbell had a so-so game as he completed 21 of 37 passes for 217 yards with 1 TD pass and 1 interception.  He also carried the ball 2 times for 6 yards (3.0 ypc) with a TD run.  Clinton Portis also had a sub par game as he carried the ball 20 times for 64 yards (3.2 ypc) and he also caught 3 passes for 25 yards (8.3 avg).  TE Chris Cooley had by far his best game of the season as he caught 9 passes for 105 yards (11.7 avg) with a TD catch.  The Redskins finished with 94 yards rushing on 29 carries (3.2 ypc) and they completed 21 of 37 passes for 210 yards.

DE Phillip Daniels is out for this Sunday for the Washington Redskins

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Redskins Talk,Injury Reports,Redskins Headlines by dawgpounded on Thursday 11 October 2007 at 10:18 pm

Phillip Daniels is likely to sit out Sunday’s game with the Packers due to a arm injury.  He has only made 5 tackles so far this season so the Redskins likely won’t miss him too much.  Demetric Evans will start in Daniels’ spot and he also has 5 tackles but he has a sack too.  Rookie Chris Wilson (1 tackle) also should get some added playing time this weekend.

Washington Redskins vs. Green Bay Packers

This is a game between two good defensive teams that like to operate in different ways on offense.  The Packers like to throw the ball and the Redskins like to grind it out on the ground.

Look for the Packers to come out throwing in this football game like they always do.  Brett Favre (1,527 yards passing, 9 TD passes) will likely spread the Redskins defense out and move the ball around to his fine corps of receivers.  The Packers offensive line must block well against DE Andre Carter and keep him out of the backfield so Favre has enough time to throw the ball.  The Redskins have only allowed 182.0 yards passing per game this season and they have only allowed 2 TD passes so this will be fun to watch.  Rookie RB DeShawn Wynn has run the ball really well this season and he seems to have locked up the starting job for the time being but he might have trouble getting too many yards against the Redskins stout run defense that is allowing only 86.0 yards rushing per game and 3.8 yards per carry.

The Redskins will likely try to play smash mouth football against the Packers.  Clinton Portis (299 yards rushing, 4.5 ypc, 3 TDs) seems to have earned back his starting job and he will take on the Packers linebacking corps.  It will be interesting to see how Nick Barnett and A.J. Hawk do against him.  The Packers do allow 226.4 yards passing per game so the Redskins might try some long stuff to Santana Moss and some short stuff to TE Chris Cooley.

PREDICTION:  This will be a low scoring, physical football game.  I like the Packers by a field goal but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Redskins sprung as upset here with the way they have been playing this year.

Antwaan Randle El is likely out Sunday for the Washington Redskins

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Redskins Talk,Injury Reports,Redskins Headlines by dawgpounded on Thursday 11 October 2007 at 9:46 pm

The Redskins will likely be without their top receiver of this season and the starting punt returner in Antwaan Randle El who has a hamstring problem.  Randle El is having his best season as a receiver as he has caught 18 passes for 338 yards (18.8 avg) and he also has returned 12 punts for 78 yards (6.5 avg).  James Thrash will replace Randle El on punt returns and he’s done a good job so far returning 2 punts for 71 yards (35.5 avg) so far this season.  Keenan McCardell will likely start opposite Santana Moss who’s ready to return from injury.  McCardell has caught 2 passes for 39 yards (19.5 avg) so far this season for the Redskins.

Washington Redskins 34, Detroit Lions 3

The Redskins dominated the Lions in every phase of the football game yesterday!  The Redskins set the tone on offense as Jason Campbell was outstanding throwing the football as he completed 23 of 29 passes for 248 yards with 2 TD passes and 0 interceptions.  The Redskins also moved the ball well on the ground.  Clinton Portis did solid work as he carried the football 18 times for 72 yards (4.0 ypc) and he also caught 2 passes for 19 yards (9.5 avg).  Fullback Mike Sellers was the secret weapon yesterday for the Redskins as he carried the ball 5 times for 24 yards (4.8 ypc) and a TD.  He also caught 3 passes for 36 yards (12.0 avg) and scored another TD.  Antwaan Randle El was the leading receiver for the Skins as he caught 7 passes for 100 yards (14.3 avg).  TE Chris Cooley also had a good game with 4 receptions for 26 yards (6.5 avg) and a TD.  The Redskins finished up 118 rushing on 35 carries (3.4 ypc) and they completed 23 of 29 passes for 248 yards.

The Redskins were led on defense by DE Andre Carter who had 8 tackles and 2 sacks one of which resulted in a safety.  Carlos Rogers had another big game as he made 6 tackles and returned an interception 61 yards for a TD in the 4th quarter.  The Redskins held the Lions to 68 yards rushing on 20 carries (3.4 ypc) and 76 yards passing on 16 of 29 completions.

The Redskins also benefitted from two stellar punt returns from James Thrash (2 for 71 yards) that helped set up the offense on short fields.

The Washington Redskins have two playmakers in the return game

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Redskins Talk by dawgpounded on Saturday 6 October 2007 at 8:26 am

Antwaan Randle El and Rock Cartwright give the Redskins an advantage against most teams.  Randle El has returned 10 punts for 76 yards (7.6 avg) but a big game changing return will happen soon for the Redskins.  Reserve running back Rock Cartwright is a power return man as he has returned 13 kickoffs for 320 yards (26.7 avg).  He is always going forward like the running back that he is.

Washington Redskins vs. Detroit Lions

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Redskins Talk,This Week's Matchup Report by dawgpounded on Friday 5 October 2007 at 6:29 pm

This is a game between two teams that have exceeded expectations so far this season.  The Lions are a surprising 3-1 on the season and the Redskins are a solid 2-1.  They have gotten where they are in different ways as the Lions have done it with offense and the Redskins have been running the football and playing defense.

The Lions will come out throwing in this football game just like they always do.  The Redskins would be smart to blitz a lot against the Lions as Lions QBs have been sacked 21 times already this season.  Still, that won’t stop the Lions from putting the ball up as they attempt 40.5 passes per week and they average 312.8 yards passing per game.  The Redskins corners will be tested as the Lions will often come out in a 4-wide formation with Roy Williams (26 rec, 388 yards, 3TDs), Shaun McDonald (21 rec, 268 yards, 3 TDs), Mike Furrey (20 rec, 246 yards) and rookie Calvin Johnson (10 rec, 189 yards, 2 TDs).  The Lions won’t likely run much against the Redskins who allow 92.0 yards rushing per game and 3.9 yards per carry.

The Redskins want to run the football to control the clock against the Lions and they should have success.  The Lions allow 114.3 yards rushing per game and 4.1 yards per carry so Clinton Portis (227 yards rushing, 4.7 ypc) could have a huge game.  The Redskins will also likely get LaDell Betts some carries as they try to pound the Lions defense into submission.  QB Jason Campbell has been so-so this season but he should have success throwing the football to Antwaan Randle El and TE Chris Cooley against a Lions defense that has allowed 267.5 yards passing per game this season.

PREDICTION:  I think the Redskins will win this football game as they will run the ball all over the Lions defense and keep the ball away from Jon Kitna and the Lions offense.

The Washington Redskins sign WR Keenan McCardell

Blogged under Bloglockers,Free Agent Additions,Front Page,General Redskins Talk by dawgpounded on Tuesday 2 October 2007 at 4:08 pm

The Washington Redskins have signed veteran WR Keenan McCardell.  McCardell played in 14 games last season for the Chargers and he caught 36 passes for 437 yards (12.1 avg) without a TD.  But, for his career McCardell has been outstanding as he has played in 200 games and caught 861 passes for 11,117 yards (12.9 avg) with 62 TD grabs.  The Redskins probably signed McCardell and Reche Caldwell earlier to guard against Santana Moss’ groin injury which could cause him to miss some time.  Moss has caught 12 passes for 199 yards (16.6 avg) with 0 TDs so far this season.
