Look for the tight ends to be more involved in the passing game in 2007

The Redskins will lean on Chris Cooley more than last season in the passing game because he’s their 2nd best option in the passing game behind Santana Moss.  Cooley played in 16 games (all starts) for the Redskins last year and he caught 57 passes for 734 yards (12.9 avg) with 6 TD grabs.  He has good hands and he could catch 70+ passes this season.  He has now played in 48 games (41 starts) in his NFL career and he has caught 165 passes for 1,822 yards (11.0 avg) with 19 TD grabs.

Eric Edwards was signed as a free agent and he will likely be the #2 TE for the Redskins this season.  He played in 16 games (9 starts) for the Cardinals last year and he caught 12 passes for 133 yards (11.1 avg) with 1 TD grab.  He has now played in 32 games (10 starts) in his NFL career and he has caught 17 passes for 184 yards (10.8 avg) with 1 TD catch.

Todd Yoder is back for the Redskins to help out as a blocker.  He played in 14 games (0 starts) last season and he caught 1 pass for 4 yards and it was a TD.  He has now played in 87 games (10 starts) in his career and he has caught 29 passes for 304 yards (10.5 avg) with 3 TD grabs.

Rookie Tyler Ecker is a blocker first.  But if he shows he can catch the football he could rocket up to #2 on the depth chart behind Chris Cooley.

The Washington Redskins have a group of underachievers at WR

Santana Moss is the only legitimate starting WR on the Redskins roster and he’s more of a really good #2 type guy than a #1.  Moss doesn’t like to go over the middle but he’s lightning fast and makes spectacular moves in the open field.  He played in 14 games (all starts) last season for the Redskins and he caught 55 passes for 790 yards (14.4 avg) with 6 TD grabs and he also carried the ball 7 times for 82 yards (11.7 ypc).  If Moss had a better receiver on the other side of the field and a better QB throwing him the ball he would probably be on of the best receivers in the NFL.   He has now played in 81 games (59 starts) and he has caught 290 passes for 4,689 yards (16.2 avg) with 34 TD grabs and has carried the ball 34 times for 206 yards (6.1 ypc).  Moss has also returned 95 punts in his career for 1,092 yards (11.5 avg) with 2 TD returns but that is a job of the past for him.

The Redskins gave big money to Antwaan Randle El with the idea of making him a starting receiver and he wasn’t up for the job.  He remains a gadget player that can’t be depended on from week to week.   He played in 16 games (all starts) last season for the Redskins and he caught 32 passes for 351 yards (11.0 avg) with 3 TD grabs and he also carried the ball 19 times for 118 yards (6.2 ypc).  Randle El also completed 2 of 3 passes (66.7%) for 88 yards with a TD (149.3 QB Rating).  He also was the primary punt return man for the Redskins as he returned 39 punts for 342 yards (8.8 avg) with 1 TD return.  Look for more of the same kind of production out of Randle El but it would be foolish of the Redskins to expect him to become more of a pass catcher as that is not his game.  Randle El has now played in 80 games (39 starts) in his NFL career and he has caught 194 passes for 2,363 yards (12.2 avg) with 10 TD grabs and he has also carried the football 73 times for 434 yards (5.9 ypc).  Randle El has now completed 16 of 19 passes (84.2%) for 216 yards with 3 TD passes and 0 interceptions (153.6 QB Rating).  Randle El has now returned 78 kickoffs for 1,742 yards (22.3 avg) with 1 TD return and he has returned 207 punts for 1,936 yards (9.4 avg) with 5 TD returns.

The Redskins traded a draft pick last season for WR Brandon Lloyd and they were disappointed in the return they got from him.  Lloyd is very inconsistent as he can make spectacular catches but he also disappears when the Redskins really need him.   He played in 15 games (12 starts) last season for the Redskins and he caught 23 passes for 365 yards (15.9 avg) with 0 TD grabs.  The Redskins hope he can step up but he probably won’t.  He has now played in 60 games (41 starts) and he has caught 128 passes for 1,875 yards (14.6 avg) with 13 TD grabs.

James Thrash is around for another season this year and he was also a huge disappointment to the Redskins last year.  He played in 16 games (0 starts) last season and he caught only 12 passes for 151 yards (12.6 avg) with 1 TD grab.  The Redskins expected much more than they got from Thrash as he was a solid player for the rival Eagles.  He has now played in 137 games (62 starts) and he has caught 272 passes for 3,458 yards (12.7 avg) with 19 TD grabs and he also has carried the football 41 times for 362 yards (8.8 ypc) with 2 TD runs.

The Redskins have also signed Corey Bradford to battle for catches this season.  He played in 9 games (2 starts) last season for the Lions and he caught 14 passes for 164 yards (11.7 avg).  He is another #3 or #4 type WR that litters the Redskins roster.  He has now played in 114 games (50 starts) and he has caught 215 passes for 3,346 yards (15.6 avg) with 25 TD grabs.

The Redskins have also signed Todd Pinkston but he hasn’t played in the NFL for over 2 seasons so don’t expect much if he makes the team.

The Washington Redskins sign WR Todd Pinkston

The Redskins have signed WR Todd Pinkston to try out for the team.  He hasn’t played since the 2004 season with the Eagles because of a blown out ACL.  Pinkston has now played in 78 games (62 starts) and he has caught 184 passes for 2,816 yards (15.3 avg) with 14 TD grabs.  Pinkston has always been a soft receiver which is not what the Redskins really need as they already have enough of them on the roster.

Washington Redskins 14, Tennessee Titans 6

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Redskins Talk,The Pre-Season by dawgpounded on Sunday 12 August 2007 at 11:33 am

What a awful display of football by both the Redskins and the Titans last night.  You know it’s bad when your best two plays of the game were made by undrafted rookies that have no realistic shot of making the Redskins’ opening day roster but that’s exactly what happened last night.  Jason Campbell didn’t look too good last night as he completed 6 of 14 passes for 104 yards.  Mark Brunell followed him in the game and he looked bad too completing 4 of 9 passes for 46 yards.  Todd Collins was the 3rd QB in and he played a good game connecting on all five of his pass attempts for 56 yards.  Derrick Blaylock was the busiest RB last night for the Redskins as he carried the ball 9 times for 28 yards (3.1 ypc) with a TD run.  Rock Cartwright didn’t do much last night as he carried the ball 7 times for only 15 yards (2.1 ypc).  Undrafted running back Marcus Mason from Youngstown State carried the ball 5 times for 22 yards (4.4 ypc) and he scored a TD.  TE Eric Edwards (3 rec, 40 yards) and WR Santana Moss (2 rec, 48 yards) looked to be the best receivers for the Redskins on Saturday Night.  The Redskins wound up running the football 27 times for 77 yards (2.9 ypc) and they completed 15 of 28 passes for 167 yards.  Remember it’s only the pre-season but that offense needs some work.

The defense stuffed the Titans running game holding them to 84 yards on 34 carries (2.5 ypc).  But the Titans completed 23 of 38 passes for 202 yards.  Undrafted rookie CB Byron Westbrook of Salisbury State made the big play of the game on defense when he recovered a fumble in the end zone late in the 4th quarter to help seal the Redskins victory.

The Washington Redskins will go with Mike Sellers at fullback again in 2007

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Redskins Talk by dawgpounded on Thursday 9 August 2007 at 8:38 pm

Mike Sellers is a good all-around football player.  He’s a decent runner, a good receiver and a good special teams player.  He played in all 16 games (6 starts) for the Redskins last season and he carried the ball 12 times for 51 yards (4.3 ypc) and he also caught 18 passes for 105 yards (5.8 avg) with 1 TD grab.  On special teams Sellers returned 4 kickoffs for 53 yards (13.3 avg) and he also made 14 tackles.  For his career Sellers has now played in 101 games (29 starts) and he has carried the ball 14 times for 54 yards (3.9 ypc) with 1 TD run and he also has caught 56 passes for 465 yards (8.3 avg) with 14 TD grabs.  He also has returned 23 kickoffs for 331 yards (14.4 avg) and he has 78 tackles on special teams.

The Washington Redskins sign running back Dee Brown

Blogged under Bloglockers,Free Agent Additions,Front Page,General Redskins Talk by dawgpounded on Wednesday 8 August 2007 at 2:35 pm

The Redskins have signed running back Dee Brown.  Brown played in 15 games last season with the Kansas City Chiefs and he carried the ball 10 times for 24 yards (2.4 ypc) and he caught 1 pass for 5 yards.  Brown has now played in 44 games (3 starts) in his NFL career and he has carried the football 119 times for 405 yards (3.4 ypc) with 4 TD runs.  He also has caught 21 passes for 114 yards (5.4 avg) with 2 TD grabs.

The Washington Redskins appear ready to give Shaun Suisham his big shot

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Redskins Talk by dawgpounded on Sunday 5 August 2007 at 2:15 pm

Steve Suisham wasn’t the kicker the whole season for the Redskins last year but he was their best one and that’s why the job is his to lose this season.  Suisham hit 81.8% of his field goal attempts and he converted all 14 of his extra points and finished with 41 points last season.  He hit 7 of 8 field goals of 39 yards or less and he was 2 of 3 on kicks of 40+ yards.

Suisham has now played in 11 games in his NFL career and he has scored 58 points for an average of 5.3 points per game.  Suisham has now made 12 of 15 (80%) of his field goal attempts and he has converted all 22 of his extra points.

The Washington Redskins are loaded at running back for 2007

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Redskins Talk by dawgpounded on Friday 3 August 2007 at 11:06 am

Not too many NFL teams can trot out a pair of running backs like the Redskins can in Clinton Portis and LeDell Betts.  With that in mind the Redskins will likely run the ball much more than they pass it to take pressure off of young QB Jason Campbell.  Clinton Portis hurt himself in the pre-season last year and it caused him to miss half of the 2006 season but when he played he was really good.  He played in 8 games (7 starts) last season and he carried the ball 127 times for 523 yards (4.1 ypc) with 7 TD runs.  He also caught 17 passes for 170 yards (10.0 avg).  Look for Portis to be a 1,000+ yard rusher again this season but his workload probably won’t be as big as it usually is with Betts around.  Portis has now played in 68 games (63 starts) and he has carried the ball 1,385 times for 6,453 yards (4.7 ypc) with 52 TD runs.  He also has caught 158 passes for 1,299 yards (8.2 avg) with 4 TD grabs.

LeDell Betts finally got the chance to show how good he was last season due to the injury to Clinton Portis.  He will likely get more work than he has prior to last season after the show he put on in 2006.  He played in 16 games (9 starts) and he carried the ball 245 times for 1,154 yards (4.7 ypc) with 4 TD runs.  He also caught 53 passes for 445 yards (8.4 avg) with 1 TD grab and he returned 2 kickoffs for 27 yards (13.5 avg).  Look for the Redskins to use Betts more in the passing game this season to keep Betts heavily involved in the offense this season.  He has played in 64 games (11 starts) in his NFL career and he has carried the ball 566 times for 2,425 yards (4.3 ypc) with 9 TD runs.  He also has caught 105 passes for 952 yards (9.1 avg) with 2 TD grabs and he has returned 80 kickoffs for 1,925 yards (24.1 avg) with 1 TD return.

The Redskins #3 running back will be determined in a Training Camp Battle between Rock Cartwright and Derrick Blaylock.  Cartwright might have a slight edge because he was with the Redskins last season.  He played in all 16 games but he only carried the ball 5 times for 15 yards (3.0 ypc).  He actually could be hurt in the competition because of how good he is as a kickoff returner.  He returned 64 kickoffs last season for 1,541 yards (24.1 avg) with 1 TD (a 100-yard return).  Cartwright has always produced when given a chance so it will be interesting to see how the Redskins use him in 2007.  He has now played in 76 games (3 starts) in his NFL career and he has carried the ball 144 times for 647 yards (4.5 ypc) with 6 TD runs and he has also caught 31 passes for 320 yards (10.3 avg) with 1 TD grab.  Cartwright has returned 80 kickoffs in his career for 1,818 yards (22.7 avg) with 1 TD return.

Derrick Blaylock got his big chance last season with the Jets and he blew it.  He played in 4 games (2 starts) and he carried the ball 25 times for 44 yards (1.8 ypc) with 0 TD runs and he caught 5 passes for 29 yards (5.8 avg).  Blaylock has been a decent backup running back until last season so he should give Cartwright a good battle for the #3 RB job.  He has played in 51 games (8 starts) and he has carried the ball 198 times for 820 yards (4.1 ypc) with 10 TD runs.  He also has caught 53 passes for 520 yards (9.8 avg) with 2 TD grabs.
