Redskins win over the Cowboys in shocking manner 22-19
It looked as if the Cowboys were going to win this football game, as Tony Romo led a drive to set up a FG attempt for Mike Vanderjagt in the final seconds of the game. Vanderjagt’s kick was blocked and the Redskins look to have been stopped with no time left on the clock, but one of the Cowboys grabbed a facemask. That set up the Redskins for a an untimed play, on which Nick Novak kicked a 47 yard FG to beat the Cowboys.
Mark Brunell played an efficient football game, completing 14 of 23 passes for 192 yards and a TD. Clinton Portis had a solid game running the ball with 23 carries for 84 yards (3.7 ypc) and a TD. LeDell Betts only carried the ball 3 times for 8 yards, but he caught 3 passes for 30 yards. TE Chris Cooley caught 3 passes for 66 yards and a fantastic TD reception. James Thrash caught 3 passes for 52 yards and Brandon Lloyd caught 2 passes for 26 yards.
LB Marcus Washington led the way on defense with 8 tackles and a sack. DT Cornelius Griffin had a good game with 7 tackles and a sack. The Redskins allowed the Cowboys to carry the ball 29 times for 111 yards (3.8 ypc), but the Skins hit Julius Jones in the end zone for a safety. The Cowboys completed 24 of 36 passes for 267 net yards passing.
This could be a win that turns the Redskins season around!Â

Joe Gibbs, I don’t know if you read this stuff, but if you do, as a longtime fan of yours and the Redskins, I am asking you to coach for the Redskins future, and start Jason Campbell or at least give him some gametime. Yes, Brunell is “efficient,” but efficient quarterbacks don’t win Superbowls. Only those with the consistent deep threat, especially on first down, do that (see Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana, Jim Plunkett, Kenny Stabler, Roger Staubach, Joe Theismann, Mark Rypien, etc.) Brunell just can’t do that at this stage of his career.
And your Hall of Fame buddy John Madden said it himself during a preseason game, “Just give the ball to Jason Campbell and get out of the way.” This guy could have some false starts, but he could be great– you shouldn’t stand in the way of that. Especially with such good wide receivers and Al Saunders long-ball approach, it certainly merits strong consideration.
Maybe you think you owe Brunell something because he got us to the playoffs last year after you benched him mid-season, but he didn’t make us NFC Champions, and most of all, he didn’t win a Superbowl for us. If that’s really what it’s all about, and I think you know it is based on your own record, then you should find every excuse to start Campbell. No one, and I mean no one, would fault you even if the guy makes mistakes. But he’s the spark the team needs, and you of all people should recognize that. He may not get us to the playoffs, but at least it wouldl be fun trying, and like Theismann said, you’ve made playing Redskin football fun.
Remember, you stuck your neck out for Doug Wiliams– this guy Campbell is better. He’s bigger, he’s stronger, and maybe even smarter. And he’s got maybe the best offensive personnel you’ve ever put together. Even if all he does is play-action after Portis runs, he would still be a great asset.
You should at least give him a chance– put Collins on injured reserve or something, and bring him in. And if he messes up, you can always go back to Brunell, but he deserves your loyalty during his slumps even more than Brunell, because he’s the Redskins’ future.
Remember Elway’s first year. It wasn’t pretty, but the next ten years for the Denver Broncos was.
Play Campbell– I guarantee you won’t regret it.

Gary, what makes you think Jason Campbell can do better than Brunell? To you have a crystal ball? He looked awful in the pre-season and you’re ready to give him the keys to the car?
Ravenhater, the guy has raw talent. I guess you weren’t watching when John Madden said, “Campbell has real presence and poise in the pocket. I would just give him the ball and get out of the way.” I’m not saying he wouldn’t make mistakes. But he’s got an arm, he’s strong, and he the fact that he was completing passes means he “understands the 700 page playbook.” You’re writing off his whole career because of a couple of bad decisions in a preseason game, while Portis was injured and not playing? On play-action alone, he would probably outplay Brunell. He certainly deserves a chance.

I think the Redskins made a bad decision to draft a QB (Campbell) that was a product of having two great running backs (Cadillac Williams and Ronnie Brown) that made the defenders in college put 8 men in the box, making him look much better in his senior season than he is.
